What is a Lynton IPL Acne Treatment?

Lynton IPL (Intense Pulse Light) treatments utilise the power of light energy in specific wavelengths to effectively reduce the frequency and severity of breakouts by destroying the bacteria on both the surface of the skin and deeper in the blocked pores and reducing sebum output.  Lynton IPL Acne treatments also improve skin texture and tone by stimulating the production of new collagen and reducing red and brown areas of the skin that are associated with breakouts.

What skin conditions/issues does Lynton IPL treat?

Acne: breakouts, pigmentation, redness and scarring.

Why Lynton IPL?

Lynton are a UK company who originate from the University of Manchester.  Their medical-grade equipment is multi award-winning and they are the only IPL supplier to the NHS.  Their IPL technology is fully customisable, ensuring fantastic treatment results.

What happens during a Lynton IPL treatment?

Customised energy selections are made based on the treatment and skin colour.  Cool gel is applied to the treatment area and then short pulses of light are released through the IPL hand piece on to the skin. The hand piece is moved around the treatment area and the process is repeated.  Protective eye goggles are worn during the treatment.

Is a Lynton IPL treatment painful?

Most people describe the discomfort as tolerable, like the flick of an elastic band or a very quick, hot pin prick. No anaesthesia is required and the skin is cooled before and after treatment.

How many Lynton IPL treatments are required for great results?

The number of sessions needed for significant improvement varies for each individual.  However, typically 6 treatments will result in a very noticeable improvement in skin texture, tone, frequency and severity of breakouts.

What is the recovery time following a Lynton IPL treatment?

  • After treatment the skin may feel hot and tingly and appear red and raised.

  • Pigmentation will darken or form 'micro-crusts' before flaking off, leading to a more even skin tone.

  • Depending on the treatment, swelling or bruising may occur.  This can last from 1-2 days to 1-2 weeks, depending on the treatment and area.

  • Red or vascular lesions may darken before being absorbed into the skin.

Is there any pre-treatment advice for Lynton IPL treatment?

  • A consultation will be conducted to discuss the treatment and determine a client's suitability.  This is a good opportunity for you to discuss your treatment goals and to ask any questions you may have.

  • A small test patch will be carried out to assess the best treatment settings for you and to see how your skin may react to a full treatment.  A full treatment can be booked for a week after the test patch.

  • Allow 14-days after botox, fillers and other aesthetic procedures, e.g. peels and microneedling.

  • Topical retinoids/retinol should be stopped 2 weeks prior to treatment.

  • It is important that the treatment area is free from a suntan, including fake tan, as the IPL cannot differentiate between the melanin in skin and in pigmented lesions or hair, so a suntan will greatly increase the risk of burns, scarring and hypopigmentation following treatment.

Is there any specific aftercare following a Lynton IPL treatment?

  • Make-up can be applied after several hours if the skin is not sore.

  • Avoid strenuous exercise, hot baths and showers, sauna, steam, massage and anything that could heat or irritate the skin for 4-5 days after treatment.

  • Use an SPF30 and protect the skin from direct sunlight during the treatment course and for at least a month after treatment ends to protect against hyperpigmentation.
