What is a dermal filler treatment?

Dermal Fillers are injections of Hyaluronic Acid (HA) gel to refresh the face by softening deep creases and restoring volume that has been lost over time.  Adding dermal fillers to an area can also remove the shadow caused by the crease, giving the impression of a lifting effect to the face. Areas that can be treated include the lips, to volumise and define, the folds between the nose and mouth, and the lines between the mouth and chin.  We aim for the most natural results at Dorset Aesthetics, and only use premium-grade, clinically-proven dermal fillers.

What happens during a dermal filler treatment?

Following the application of numbing cream, the filler is injected in small amounts into the treatment area until the desired results are obtained.  Massaging the area is sometimes necessary to smooth out any bumps of filler. We work with you and take our time to ensure you are comfortable and that you are happy with the results.  A cool pack will be applied to help with swelling, and arnica cream will be applied to help with bruising.

Is a dermal filler treatment painful?

This treatment can be uncomfortable.  However, the products we use have local anaesthetic in them to help to minimise the discomfort during the procedure and numbing cream is applied for at least 30 minutes before the procedure.  We go at your pace and listen to what you need so that that you are as comfortable as possible.

How long do results last?

Results are immediate, but the best results are seen after two-weeks after swelling and any bruising has subsided. Hyaluronic Acid is naturally produced by the body and will reabsorbed over a period of 6-18 months, depending on the area treated and the filler used.

What is the recovery time following a dermal filler treatment?

You may experience some or any of the following: redness, swelling, bruising, itching, dryness and tenderness around the area treated, which can last for up to two-weeks.  You may also experience lumps of product and swelling. These can be reduced by massage and should also resolve within two weeks.

Potential side effects will be discussed in your consultation.  We are highly trained to deal with side effects and complications and are always on hand should you have any concerns post-treatment.  You will be offered a two-week review to ensure you are happy with the results.

Is there any pre-treatment advice for dermal filler treatment?

  • Avoid alcohol and anti-inflammatories (e.g., Aspirin, Ibuprofen, etc.) for 24-48 hours before treatment.

Is there any specific aftercare following a dermal filler treatment?

  • Avoid exposure to UV light and heat i.e. sauna, steam, sun beds, hot showers, strenuous exercise, etc., for a minimum of 48 hours or until swelling has subsided.

  • Keep the area cool with a cold compress to reduce swelling.  Don't apply ice directly onto the skin.

  • Avoid unnecessary pressure over any areas treated, especially in the first 24 hours.

  • Avoid any facial massages or other aesthetic treatments for a minimum of two weeks, or until the area has fully healed.
